Paging Mr Don Shula

The daily quotation on my Collins desk calender today is from Don Shula:

"Success is not forever and failure is not fatal."

That's not a bad line, I suppose, though I doubt Mr Wilde has much to worry about, but who the heck is Don Shula?

The name sounds Hawaiian.

Don Shula is an old American football coach. . .our football coaches are great for those kind of cliches.

Specifically, Don Shula is the first coach in NFL football history to lead his team (the Miami Dolphins) to an undefeated season - 17 wins and no losses including playoff games in 1972. This season, the New England Patriots have completed the regular football season with a record of 16 wins and no losses and are favoured to win the "Super Bowl" - the NFL championship - meaning a record of 19 wins and no losses. This is the first time since 1972 that a team has finished the regular season undefeated. Meanwhile the Miami Dolphins, a team that Shula hasn't coached since 1995, had a record of 1 win and 15 losses in the season that was just completed. "Success is not forever and failure is not fatal" indeed.
